What do drawing-paper weight and texture tell you?
Drawing-paper weight and texture describe different properties. Grams per square metre, written gsm or g/m², gives mass per area; tooth describes the surface texture that interacts with your drawing material. Choose by the intended marks and the manufacturer's stated media suitability, not by the largest weight number. Keep product labels and safety instructions in view: a suitable paper does not remove the hazards of pigments, dust, solvents, or sprays.
For a graphite study, the useful shopping question is “Which surface supports the marks I want?” A heavier sheet may be useful, but the number alone does not tell you whether fine lines, broad shading, or repeated corrections will behave as you expect.
This is a desk-researched label-reading guide, not a hands-on paper test. The named examples illustrate how manufacturers describe different properties; they are not a ranking or a claim that every retailer stocks the same version.
Which label answers which question?
Keep these fields separate when comparing pads or loose sheets:

For your own comparison record, copy the range name as well as the manufacturer. “Drawing paper, 200 gsm” is less specific than the exact range, finish, size, and packaging. A saved product page is useful, but compare it with the label on the actual pad before assuming they match.
What does gsm mean?
Gsm expresses the mass of one square metre of paper in grams. Canson identifies grammage as grams per square metre; the unit gives an equal-area basis for comparison rather than the weight of a retail pad. Canson grammage explanation
Here is an original hypothetical calculation, not a measured product:
- A sheet measures 30 × 40 cm, or 0.30 × 0.40 m.
- Its area is 0.12 m².
- At a nominal 200 g/m², calculated paper mass is 0.12 × 200 = 24 g.
- At a nominal 160 g/m², the same area gives 0.12 × 160 = 19.2 g.
- The calculated difference is 4.8 g for that sheet.
These numbers describe mass, not thickness or strength. They exclude a pad's cover, backing board, binding, packaging, and anything added to the paper. Actual products also have manufacturing tolerances; this is not a way to prove a pad defective using a kitchen scale.
The example shows why equal-area comparisons matter. A large sheet of lighter paper can weigh more than a small sheet of heavier paper. Comparing whole-pad weights introduces sheet count and packaging too, so it does not isolate grammage.
Why can two papers have the same pound weight?
Pound weight needs its measuring convention. Strathmore explains that its basis-weight calculation uses 500 sheets at the paper type's basis size. Different paper types can use different sizes, so matching pound numbers do not necessarily identify matching grammage. Its guidance also says that weight does not necessarily reflect quality. The practical response is to use the maker's published gsm when comparing paper categories. Do not convert every pound rating with one multiplier. If only pounds are shown, look for the exact manufacturer's specification rather than borrowing a conversion from another range.
Nor should you read the rating as the weight of the small retail pad in your hand. The basis measurement and the number of sheets sold are separate pieces of information.
What is paper tooth?
Tooth is the surface texture that receives the drawing medium. Strathmore describes textured surfaces as having peaks and valleys; the surface selected affects how graphite marks and shading appear. Its graphite guidance recommends choosing the surface in relation to the intended effect, rather than treating all drawing tasks alike. Strathmore graphite-paper guidance
That is a more useful starting point than “smooth is good” or “rough is good.” Fine line work and visible textured shading are different aims. Your choice can also change with pencil, mark size, and whether you want the paper texture to remain part of the finished image.
Canson's French-language drawing-paper guide distinguishes surface choices for charcoal, graphite or coloured pencil, and pen-and-ink work. It also discusses paper that feels thick relative to its grammage. A product photo cannot reliably tell you exactly how that sheet will feel under your pencil. If texture is critical, a manufacturer sample or small purchase can answer more than enlarging a thumbnail.
What do smooth and vellum mean on Bristol paper?
Within Strathmore's Bristol explanation, smooth has little or no tooth and is associated with fine lines and detail. Vellum has textured peaks and valleys that receive dry media, including graphite and coloured pencil. These are surface descriptions within that paper category. Read the full product name. “Bristol” without the finish leaves an important question unanswered, while “vellum” by itself is not a complete paper specification. Do not assume that every product using a similar finish word has identical texture or composition.
A sensible first shortlist might therefore be:

These are editorial selection criteria, not proof that a particular paper will perform well for you. Different artists may reasonably prefer different surfaces for the same subject.
Can the same texture come in different weights?
Yes. On the Canson international product page checked for this guide, White drawing paper is described as light grain and listed in 90, 120, 160, and 200 gsm versions. It is identified for pencil, coloured pencil, and felt pens. The shared texture description does not collapse those four weights into one product. Canson White drawing paper
This is a useful label-reading example, not a recommendation to buy the heaviest version. Confirm the exact weight, format, and local package. The page does not establish that every retailer carries every option.
It also does not authorize adding a watercolour wash simply because the selected version is heavier. If your project combines dry drawing with wet colour, check the paper's stated wet-media suitability and the colour product's directions separately.
How can you compare paper without inventing a universal score?
Use this original record for two candidate papers. Complete the label fields first; leave the observation fields blank until you actually use a sample.

For an optional ordinary-pencil sample, use an unused sheet or authorized sample and make comparable line and shaded areas. Keep the pencil and mark size consistent. This is an informal preference check, not a controlled durability experiment or a published test protocol.
Record specific observations such as “the surface pattern remains visible in this shaded patch,” rather than “professional quality.” Do not invent a layer count, erasing limit, or permanence score. If you change both pencil and paper, note both changes; you have not isolated the paper's contribution.

What safety limits remain regardless of paper?
Read the actual drawing-material labels. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Art and Craft Safety Guide identifies potential hazards in graphite and some coloured-pencil pigments, warns about inhalable charcoal and pastel dust, and describes solvent hazards in spray fixatives. This comparison requires no blade, sanding, loose pigment, fixative, or solvent. Do not add those processes to change a sample's surface. Follow the manufacturer's current safety instructions for any material you use; seek qualified studio-safety guidance before unfamiliar hazardous processes. Do not blow drawing dust into the air.
What should you choose first?
Write one sentence describing the intended drawing, then check the exact media recommendation, finish, weight, and format. Choose a manageable initial quantity and keep the label with your notes.
